The Nokia Lumia 521 has a minimal, elegant design that is compact and comfortable to hold. RAM and onboard storage is low, however, the Micro SD slot may be expanded for extra photos, videos, and music. Call clarity is above average with loud audio and optional Wi-Fi calling. Despite lacking 4G LTE support, the Nokia Lumia 521 still connects to T-Mobile's 4G HSPA+ network. Nokia HERE suite provides useful offline navigation for the USA, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. While the removable battery life is mediocre, replacements are inexpensive and widely available. The 5MP rear camera’s contains HD video capture, but lacks a camera flash module. The screen has low resolution with mediocre outdoor visibility. Windows 8 delivers a solid performance with an intuitive customizable interface and a growing selection of applications.
The Nokia Lumia 521 is suitable for those who favor off-contract handsets, a strong camera, and enjoy the Windows phone ecosystem. Those who prioritize 4G LTE speeds or seek more sophisticated software may be better off elsewhere.
