Detailed Item Information
While Pro Kennex’s newest rackets incorporate a wood “spine” around the hoop, the wood is fused with carbon graphite in an attempt to combine the best features of wood and graphite. When you strike a ball with a Core 1 racket, each of the independent graphite cylinders creates a separate, opposing shock wave. When these two opposing shock waves meet at the wood spine they counteract or cancel each other, eliminating all of the harsh negative impact shock and vibration. The wood spine then transmits only the remaining clean, responsive, organic feel to your hand. It’s lightweight power with feel. This should appeal to traditionalists trying to re-capture the benefits of wood in a graphite world. By not extending the wood spine to the edge of the racket, two independent graphite cylinders are created, one on each side of the spine. This is done to provide a more natural feel, while dampening vibration.
Pro Kennex Core 1 Reviews
From the Tennis Talk Forums
"Core1 #6 is the only modern racquet that has wood core built inside. The ball feel is great, and it is very elbow friendly. I tried all the stiff poly or kevlar strings on it and they dont give me any elbow discomfort. The string pattern is as open as K90 when i put them side by side. Lots of spin, and easy to swing compare to K90." - Cyberwing88
"I have a #10 with bumper, leather and lead. I break it out when I want to be a little lazy. Very throwback feel especially with gut. It can be a little harsh on off-center hits, because it is a fairly stiff frame. Big open pattern that tears through strings like crazy. I think all the core series frames will eventually be collectible pieces as it was truly genuine attempt by PK to go really old-school... Rod Laver was using the OS version when I saw him at La Costa in 2004."
- Louis Netman
"I just picked up a #6 w/ bumper on and found the SW a bit too high for my liking. I need to try it with the bumper off still. It was a spontaneous pick up because of the hard to pass up price. Like new condition. Sweet looking racket. Great feel and really smooth and comfortable." - Tennisinhoc

Player Spotlight
Rodney George "Rod"Laver MBE (born 9 August 1938) is an Australian formertennis player widely regarded as one of the greatest in tennis history. He was theNo. 1 ranked professional from 1964–70, spanning four years before and three years after the start of the Open Era. He also was the No. 1 amateur in 1961–62 according to Lance Tingay.
Laver's 200 singles titles are the most in tennis history, and he holds the all-time male singles records of 22 titles in a single season (1962) and seven consecutive years (1964–70) winning at least 10 titles per season. He excelled on all of the court surfaces of his time: grass, clay, hard, carpet, and wood/parquet.
Despite being barred from playing the Grand Slam tournaments for the five years prior to the Open Era, he still won 11 singles titles because he was the only player to twice achieve The Grand Slam, in 1962 and 1969, and remains the only man to do so during the Open Era. He also won eightPro Slam titles, including winning the Pro "Grand Slam" in 1967, and contributed to five Davis Cuptitles for Australia during an age when Davis Cup was deemed as significant as the Grand Slams.
Although of a slightly short and medium build (1.73 m / 5 ft 8"), Laver developed a technically complete serve-and-volley game, with aggressive groundstrokes to back it up. Dan Maskell described him as "technically faultless." His left-handed serve was well disguised and wide swinging. His groundstrokes on both flanks were hit with topspin, as was the attacking topspin lob, which Laver developed into a weapon. His stroke technique was based on quick shoulder turns, true swings, and accurate timing. His backhand, often hit on the run, was a point-ender that gave him an advantage. Laver was very quick and had a strong left forearm. Rex Bellamy wrote, "The strength of that wrist and forearm gave him blazing power without loss of control, even when he was on the run and at full stretch. The combination of speed and strength, especially wrist strength, enabled him to hit ferocious winners when way out of court." At the net, he had forcing volleys, often hit as stroke volleys. Especially on the backhand, he could hit sharp underspin angles as well. He was difficult to lob, because of his springing agility, and when forced to retreat, he could come up with a vicious counterpunch.
As an amateur, Laver was a somewhat flashy player, often a late starter. He had to learn to control his adventurous shot-making and integrate percentage tennis into his game when he turned professional. In his prime, he could adapt his style to all surfaces and to all conditions. Laver had a strong record in five-set-matches, often turning things around with subtle changes of tactics.
